A C-section is a surgical procedure that involves delivering a baby through incisions in your abdomen and uterus. It is also known as a cesarean section or cesarean delivery. When a vaginal delivery is not possible or safe, or when your or your baby's health is jeopardized, they are used. The first step in a C-section procedure is to prepare you for anesthesia. The majority of planned C-sections are performed with an epidural, so you remain awake throughout the procedure. However, you may be unconscious in some cases due to general anesthesia. An antiseptic will be applied to your abdomen, and an oxygen mask may be placed over your mouth and nose to provide more oxygen to your baby. Your provider will then place a sterile drape over your legs and chest, as well as around the incision site. Finally, a sterile curtain or drape will be placed between your head and lower body by your healthcare providers. Following that, the obstetrician will make an incision through your skin and into your abdominal wall. They had the option of making a vertical or transverse incision. A horizontal incision is also known as a bikini incision. Your provider will then make a 3- to 4-inch incision in the uterine wall. This incision can be vertical or horizontal. Finally, the obstetrician will extract your baby through incisions. The umbilical cord is cut, the placenta is removed, and the wounds are stitched and stapled shut. The procedure for an emergency C-section is the same; however, the rate at which your baby is extracted differs. During a planned C-section, the delivery takes about 10 to 15 minutes. Your provider removes your baby in a matter of minutes during an emergency C-section. You will be able to see and hold your baby shortly after birth if you are awake during your C-section.
