A C-section, also known as a cesarean section or cesarean delivery, is a surgical procedure that involves delivering a baby through incisions in your abdomen and uterus. They are used when a vaginal delivery is not possible or safe, or when your or your baby's health is jeopardized. Preparing you for anesthesia is the first step in a C-section procedure. Most planned C-sections are performed with an epidural, so you are awake during the procedure. However, in some cases, you are unconscious due to general anesthesia. Your abdomen will be cleaned with an antiseptic, and an oxygen mask may be placed over your mouth and nose to provide more oxygen to your baby. Your provider will then wrap a sterile drape around the incision site, as well as over your legs and chest. Finally, your healthcare providers will place a sterile curtain or drape between your head and lower body. The obstetrician will then make an incision through your skin and into your abdominal wall. They could make a vertical or transverse incision. A bikini incision is another name for a horizontal incision. Your provider will then make a 3- to 4-inch incision in the wall of your uterus. This incision can also be horizontal or vertical. Finally, the obstetrician will remove your baby via incisions. The umbilical cord is severed, the placenta is removed, and the incisions are stitched and stapled closed. The steps for an emergency C-section are the same; however, the rate at which your baby is removed is different. The delivery takes about 10 to 15 minutes during a planned C-section. In an emergency C-section, your provider removes your baby in a matter of minutes. If you are awake during your C-section, you will be able to see and hold your baby shortly after birth.
